Seasoning your Humidor

So, you’ve just purchased a brand-new humidor and you’re excited to fill it with cigars. Before it can properly store and protect your collection, there’s one essential step you need to take: seasoning your humidor.

Seasoning ensures that the Spanish cedar inside your humidor absorbs enough moisture to create the right environment for your cigars. Without this step, the wood may draw moisture out of your cigars, causing them to dry out. Below are two reliable methods to season your humidor.

Method 1: Boveda Seasoning Packs
Remove the plastic overwrap from the Boveda 84% humidity packs.

Place the appropriate number of packs inside your empty humidor (check the Boveda instructions for capacity).

Close the lid and let the packs sit for 14 days so the wood can fully absorb the moisture.

After 14 days, remove and discard the packs, then transition to your regular maintenance routine.

Method 2: Distilled Water & Sponge
Soak an unscented, soap-free sponge in distilled water, then wring it out until damp but not dripping.

Wipe down all the exposed Spanish cedar surfaces inside the humidor.

Place the damp sponge in a plastic bag inside the humidor (to prevent direct contact with the wood).

Close the lid and allow the humidor to sit for at least 48 hours (ideally 3–5 days) for the wood to absorb the moisture.

Why Seasoning Matters
A properly seasoned humidor creates the stable humidity your cigars need to stay fresh, flavorful, and ready to enjoy. This step protects your investment, preserves the craftsmanship of your cigars, and ensures that every smoke is as smooth and satisfying as the maker intended. Taking the time to season your humidor is not just maintenance—it’s a commitment to the quality of your cigar experience.
